Logged Dive #276 – Diving With Evil Jeff Off Of Long Point

    Long Point, CA
    (aka The Old Marineland)

    Dove With Evil Jeff

    In With: 3000 psi
    Out With: 400 psi
    Max depth: 60 feet
    Waves: Minor Chop
    Visibility: 10 feet
    Water Temperature: Chilly
    Total Bottom Time: 65 minutes

The small group of regular divers met at 8 AM; Reverend Al, Dennis G, Evil Jeff and a few others.

The point looked good, so it was decided to go off the Point and exit the cove.

The walk down is not for the unmacho.

I told Reverend Al that I was going to follow the group; Al later paired me with Evil Jeff.

Al dropped, but skillfully recovered one of his fins in the surf zone.

The seven of us made it through the surf zone, swam out and met around a lobster trap buoy.

    The resort is under construction.

We met around a lobster buoy.

I told Evil Jeff to lead and I’ll follow; we descended…

We landed right on top of the statue.

… and landed right on the statute that we were going to look for.

We toured around the various points of interest, looking in lobster holes and admiring the scenery.

    A nice Long Point reef.

    An abandoned lobster trap.

We came across an abandoned and rotting lobster trap.

    Lobsters are fairly shallow again.

There were plenty of lobsters around and all hid safely out of reach.

    I’m glad they’re shallower now.

Vis was 10 feet, but compared to my other dives lately, I wasn’t complaining.

A reef off of Long Point.

    A reef along Long Point.

    Evil Jeff inspects a reef.

When I was at 1500 psi, we started swimming towards the cove.

When I was down to 500 psi, Evil Jeff handed me his auxiliary second stage; he had 1500 psi left.

I thought to myself I must be really crappy on air consumption or Evil Jeff doesn’t breath; I later found out that his tank had 40 more cubic feet of air than my tank.

We ran across Reverend Al and Dennis peaking into lobster holes.

A heavy chain lies on the ocean floor…

A heavy chain lies on the ocean floor.

Jeff gave the signal to ascend; I put my reg back in my mouth and slowly swam to the surface.

We were about 50 yards from the cove; Jeff thought we were further.

As we were surface swimming to the cove, a small boat slowly approached us within yelling distance.

The guys yelled, “…our lobster traps… the DFG will be meeting you guys to see if you’ve been poaching our traps.”

Evil Jeff yelled back, “OK, that’s great.”

We exited the cove without incident.

Dive Bum Don said that the guys in the boat were looking at us a ways away through binoculars and saw us descend near their lobster traps.

We weren’t poaching, just using their buoy as a meeting spot.

However, I do see their point, and these guys have been known to be mean to divers.

Evil Jeff said that Bill surfaced above a lobster trap to a shotgun in his face.

I’ve been told by a lobster trapper that he used to carry bricks in the boat to drop on bubbles that were around his trap.

We all walked back up as a group and debriefed.

An Ultralight passed over head - how cool!

A UFO disguised as an Ultralight passed overhead – how cool!

    Debriefing is in full swing.

We drank beer and talked about diving, dive accidents and the kid who died here a few years ago while SCUBA diving with his father.

Logged Dive #275 – The Dive That Sucked – Veterans Park, Redondo Beach

    Veterans Park
    Redondo Beach, CA

    Solo Diving

    In With: 3000 psi
    Out With: 1000 psi
    Max depth: 60 feet
Waves: Some large sets of swells up to five feet.
Visibility: 10 feet or so at best
    Water Temperature: 55 degrees
Total Bottom Time: 35 minutes or so

Well this was a really stupid dive!

I arrived and geared up around 5 PM; Mirek was coming back from diving and didn’t say anything to me about the sucky conditions.

The rest of the Divevets were slowly showing up.

I asked Shanon, “What does it look like?”

“It looks like the ocean,” she said.

I geared up and started walking towards the stairs; out of the corner of my eye, this skinny homeless looking guy was approaching me.

I looked over and it’s one of my coworkers!

Yes, I have a “real” job to keep from being homeless.

My coworker’s mouth dropped open and he said, “I always thought of you as a cubicle jockey, fat, beer swirling non-macho kind of a guy.

“I never would have imagined that you went SCUBA diving.”

I swore him to secrecy and continued down to the beach.

The swells were fairly large; I would have canceled any classes – if I was an instructor and if I was teaching.

I made it through the surf zone, swam out and submerged in 20 feet of water.

Mirek had reported seeing two lobsters at the end of the line that went North; I followed the line to some sort of anchor.

    Some crabs were sleeping…

    A sleeping crab

    …others were ready to attack…

    A crab readies for attack

Continuing West, it suddenly became really dark; I looked up and was under a huge school of mackerel.

I continued on, but noticed that it wasn’t getting any lighter.

I then realized that the sun was probably close to setting and I did not bring a light!

I went South along the bottom of the shelf at 60 feet trying to find the “Monument,” but couldn’t.

I went back up the shelf; it was getting darker…

Dumb as me without my light.

Crap, I should have brought my light!

I swam along the bottom slowly making my way back and surfaced in 15 feet of water in pretty large swells.

I took my time getting ashore, breathing off my regulator as I let the swells push me back to the sand.

I couldn’t figure out if it was just dark because of the evening sunset, or if the visibility really sucked.

Mirek told me, “The vis is only 5 feet in the canyon.”

Well, as I said, I should have brought a light.

I gave Dennis G. a report that the conditions were OK; I didn’t realize that vis sucked that bad.

We did our traditional debriefing in the parking lot.

Some new divers showed up and introduced themselves.
