Logged Dive #31 Shaw’s Cove, Laguna Beach, CA

    Shaw’s Cove, Laguna Beach, CA

Dove with Nick (Photos By Nick)

This is one of Nick’s suggested spots.

I met Nick at his place, we took his truck from there.

It took an hour to get there on PCH (from Long Beach).

Shaw’s Cove is a small beach with a stair case leading up to a residential area.

We entered the water around 10 AM, maybe 10:30 AM.

Nick had his camera, I had my spear.

    Off Of Shaw’s Cove

Facing the ocean, we swam out and submerged.

We swam toward the West; not much kelp.

    On the hunt!

There were a lot of empty mussel shells that littered the bottom.

Small fish, star fish, some sea urchins.

    Swimming through the arch.

    Nick Swims through the arch.
We found the arch and swam through.

On the other side of the arch (going West) was a very strong current that kept pushing us back.
    Digging between the rocks.
There’s also a cave a little North East of the arch — well, maybe a tube like reef structure.

I went in, but it looked really narrow, so I backed out.
    Green Anemone

    Abundant fish!

A nice reef off of Shaw’s Cove

Nick did the photography, although I snapped a few pictures myself.

The exit was easy; there’s a lot of stairs going back up.

Well, same amount as down, but going back up sucked.

We threw all the stuff in the back of Nick’s truck and went to the dive store to fill the tanks.

I’m borrowing Instructor Ed’s tank, so I had to get it visually inspected. The last tag was from 2002.

    In with: 2900 psi
    Out with: 800 psi
Waves: 2 feet, breaking close to shore
    Max depth: 25 feet

Logged Dive #30 Vet’s Park, Redondo Beach, CA

    Veteran’s Park
    Redondo Beach, CA

Dove with Nick (Photos By Nick)

We were originally going to dive at Malaga Cove, but the walk to the sand, the waves and low tide made it an obviously bad spot at the time.

    We drove to Long Point.

The waves were too big for Nick to handle.

We went to Redondo Beach (Veteran’s Park) and the waves were only two to three feet – Perfect!

The Redondo Stairs From The Water

We entered the water about 9:15 AM. It was easy going out.

    Me Taking A Joke Picture

I took a joke picture of me “eating” underwater.

    Oh Crap! Where’s My Mouthpiece!?

OK, the picture has been taken, now where the hell did my mouthpiece go?

We looked for the “pilings of the old pier;” we couldn’t find them.

We went out, swam South along the self then down to 75 feet.

Then we swam North and back up the shelf.

    Perfect navigation!

A Sea Feather Off Of Redondo Beach

Sort of rough getting ashore, but it was okay. Nick did really well.

    In with: 3000 psi
    Out with: 1000 psi
    Max depth: 75 feet
    Visibility: 15-20 feet
    Temperature: Cool
