Night Diving, Solo Diving – So Cal Buddy Diving with the Divevets off of the Island Diver boat

    In With: 2700 psi
    Out With: 500 psi
    Max depth: 40 feet
    Waves: Minor chop
    Visibility: 15-20 feet
    Water Temperature: Cool
    Total Bottom Time: 40 minutes

We thought the bugs would be shallower than where we had been.

Captain Alec moved the boat to a spot closer to shore.

I was the first one over board; I submerged to 35 feet and headed towards shore.

I caught three shorts heading to 15 feet.

It got pretty silty and surgy, so I headed back towards the boat.

I had a big problem with getting stuck in the kelp and almost had my regulator ripped out of my mouth after getting caught.

I brought one lobster to the surface, but it was a tad short and I threw it back.

I searched and search; I came across a fairly large lobster, but missed grabbing it.

Getting low on air, I surfaced.

I had to bitch crawl over mounds of kelp while making my way back to the boat.

I caught one lobster for the night, Bob and Dan I think each limited.

The rest of the divers caught two, three and four.

Captain Alec pointed out that my light was not very bright; I need to get fresh batteries.

We debriefed on the way back and in the parking lot of King’s Harbor.

Next to the Island Diver is a huge boat where the rich owner put a surveillance system up to watch us drink beer.

The guy must be bored to watch us.

I told Dan and Bob my story of how I got the nickname “Psycho Solo Diver.”

It bored Dan so much that he left.

Bob gave me a lesson on how to de-ass the lobster tails.

As Dan put it, “Bob is the ass expert.”

As it turns out, I had been using the wrong end of the antennae.
