The Divevet&#8217;s 4th Annual Underwater Pumpkin Carving Contest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Divevet&#8217;s 4th Annual Underwater Pumpkin Carving Contest<br \/>\nVeteran&#8217;s Park<br \/>\nRedondo Beach, CA<\/p>\n<p>Solo Diving<\/p>\n<p>In With: 2500 psi<br \/>\nOut With: 900 psi<br \/>\nMax depth: 70 feet<br \/>\nWaves: None!<br \/>\nVisibility: 15-25 feet<br \/>\nWater Temperature: Cool, in the 60&#8217;s<br \/>\nTotal Bottom Time: About 40 minutes with a 25 minute shore break<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been running around all morning long.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve had problems with the Duster, had to buy memory for my new camera, in addition to beer and a pumpkin for the contest.<\/p>\n<p>I arrived at 10:15 AM, 45 minutes early.<\/p>\n<p>Nick was supposed to meet me, but didn&#8217;t show up until later, without air and his regulator &#8211; he was rushed too.<\/p>\n<p>He helped me last night when I had car troubles.<\/p>\n<p>I signed a Divevets waiver&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/149.jpg\" alt=\"Me heading out to the water with my pumpkin.\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8230;and headed out to the water to do some carving.<\/p>\n<p>The suggestion was made to me to put weight in the pumpkin so it would sink;  I filled mine with a few handfuls of sand.<\/p>\n<p>EASY OUT!<\/p>\n<p>There were no waves!<\/p>\n<p>I swam out and submerged to 20 feet and started carving.<\/p>\n<p>I already knew what I was going to do, and my idea was sort of simple &#8211; I carved two eyes, a nose, mouth and ears.<\/p>\n<p>I was back on shore within 15 minutes.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/loser.jpg\" alt=\"My underwater pumpkin carving entry.\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I went back to the table, turned my pumpkin sideways, stabbed it with a dive knife that I found a while back and decorated it with pumpkin guts.<\/p>\n<p>I took my new underwater camera and decided to devirginize it.<\/p>\n<p>Again,  I made it out with no problems.<\/p>\n<p>There was no surf zone as there was no surf.<\/p>\n<p>I tried finding divers who were busy carving pumpkins, but didn&#8217;t see any by the time I made it to the shelf.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/pict0020aa.JPG\" alt=\"The Monument off of Vet\u2019s Park\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I went over the shelf and found the &#8220;monument&#8221; at 70 feet.<\/p>\n<p>I tested my camera by taking various pictures of the site &#8211; and a spectacular looking site at that!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/pict0025.jpg\" alt=\"Self portrait of me underwater.\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I tried my famous &#8220;hold my arm out and take a self portrait&#8221; snapshot.<\/p>\n<p>I made it back up to the top of the shelf and slowly swam back to shore.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/237.jpg\" alt=\"Pumpkin carvers enter the water.\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Almost in, I noticed some divers coming out, pumpkins in hand.<\/p>\n<p>I had done really well on air and followed them to get some shots.<\/p>\n<p>There were about four or five carvers and two others watching and taking pictures&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/331.jpg\" alt=\"An underwater pumpkin carver.\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/427.jpg\" alt=\"Careful, careful\u2026 this is almost brain surgery.\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/527.jpg\" alt=\"The underwater carving continues.\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/624.jpg\" alt=\"Pal, I\u2019m not going to steal your design!\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/721.jpg\" alt=\"The vis is pretty good today!\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/817.jpg\" alt=\"The finishing touches are added to this pumpkin.\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I took a few snap shots and went ashore &#8211; I was getting thirsty.<\/p>\n<p>My brother Paul stopped by Veteran&#8217;s Park to see if I was there;  I was, so he joined me and Nick for the festivities.<\/p>\n<p>The beer and bratwursts flowed freely&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/pict0060tytyty.jpg\" alt=\"Paul double fists beer.\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8230;as the pumpkins came ashore and collected on the contest table&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/912.jpg\" alt=\"Pumpkins collect on the table.\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The judges chose the winners&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/1113.jpg\" alt=\"The judges chose the winners.\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When it was all said and done, I won nothing!<\/p>\n<p>Not first, second or third&#8230;
