{"id":629,"date":"2007-04-07T09:31:59","date_gmt":"2007-04-07T16:31:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/?p=629"},"modified":"2008-02-03T10:39:07","modified_gmt":"2008-02-03T17:39:07","slug":"logged-dive-227-the-divevets-annual-easter-egg-dive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/?p=629","title":{"rendered":"Logged Dive #227 &#8211; The Divevets Annual Easter Egg Dive"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Divevets Annual Easter Egg Dive<br \/>\nMalaga Cove, Palos Verdes Estates, CA<\/p>\n<p>Dove with &#8220;Bob from the Divevets&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In With: 2700 psi<br \/>\nOut With: 500 psi<br \/>\nMax depth: 20 feet<br \/>\nWaves:  Sort of choppy, five feet and rolling<br \/>\nVisibility: 8 feet<br \/>\nWater Temperature: Cool<br \/>\nTotal Bottom Time: 45 minutes<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the event:<\/p>\n<p>110 boiled eggs are dropped into the water over a 150 feet area surrounding a buoy.<\/p>\n<p>Each egg has a card suit on it.<\/p>\n<p>Divers collect four eggs and bring them to shore.<\/p>\n<p>A flop card is drawn and prizes are awarded based on the best hands.<\/p>\n<p>I got to Malaga about 8:30 AM; the Divevets already had a tent, chairs, and the barbecue already set up.<\/p>\n<p>Bob was in the water earlier; he reported 8 foot vis and surge.<\/p>\n<p>Bob wanted to &#8220;buddy up&#8221; on this dive to get past the Dive Masters.<\/p>\n<p>Our plan was, if we got separated, to continue our dives on our own.<\/p>\n<p>Dan gave the dive briefing around 9:30 AM;  at 10:00 AM all the divers were on the sandy beach.<\/p>\n<p>I already had my fins on.<\/p>\n<p>When the word was given, the divers started walking out.<\/p>\n<p>I forgot Malaga was shallow for a ways, so I was swimming out along side people who were walking out in knee deep water.<\/p>\n<p>The surface swim was strenuous with all the divers racing to the buoy.<\/p>\n<p>Bob submerged and I followed.<\/p>\n<p>Vis sucked so bad that I couldn&#8217;t follow him, so I surfaced and continued to swim.<\/p>\n<p>My compass got stuck and I ended up going the wrong way for a bit.<\/p>\n<p>I must have been the last one to swim to the buoy area.<\/p>\n<p>I submerged about 150 feet from the orange buoy and swam toward it.<\/p>\n<p>In the first 15 minutes, I collected two eggs &#8211; a seven of spades and a king of hearts.<\/p>\n<p>I spent the next 30 minutes trying to find two more!<\/p>\n<p>I trolled over the sand and reefs in 15-20 feet of water.<\/p>\n<p>I occasionally would run in to another diver or group; I surfaced several times to get my bearings.<\/p>\n<p>I realized after 45 minutes that two more eggs wasn&#8217;t going to happen.<\/p>\n<p>I ascended with 500 psi left.<\/p>\n<p>I did the long surface swim back and was greeted by another diver and his daughter.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;How did you do?&#8221; he asked.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I got a seven.
