{"id":448,"date":"2005-09-18T20:30:28","date_gmt":"2005-09-19T03:30:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/?p=448"},"modified":"2008-01-25T19:15:44","modified_gmt":"2008-01-26T02:15:44","slug":"logged-dive-146-safety-diver-for-johns-ow-class","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/?p=448","title":{"rendered":"Logged Dive #146 &#8211; Safety Diver For John&#8217;s OW Class"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Casino Point, Catalina, CA<\/p>\n<p>Dove with Instructor John and his Open Water students Pedro, Leeza, Cheech and his two advanced students.<strong>*  <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>John&#8217;s wife Rebecca came along to bubble watch.<\/p>\n<p>In With: 2000 psi<br \/>\nOut With: 1200 psi<br \/>\nMax depth: 60 feet<br \/>\nWaves:  1 to 2 feet, insignificant<br \/>\nVisibility: 25 feet<br \/>\nWater Temperature: Cool<br \/>\nTotal Bottom Time: 15 minutes<br \/>\n<strong>*Student names have been changed.<\/strong><br \/>\nNotable Event: Dealt with a tired and panicked diver.<\/p>\n<p>The idea was to go to the barge with the group.<\/p>\n<p>I went down first, the rest followed.  <\/p>\n<p>Cheech was a little lost getting down, it took him a little over a minute.<\/p>\n<p>John lead, I took up the back.<\/p>\n<p>Leeza&#8217;s fin fell off; I put it back on.<\/p>\n<p>We followed John through some kelp down to a sandy portion of the floor at 60 feet.<\/p>\n<p>Leeza just stopped, kneeling on the sandy bottom.<\/p>\n<p>She didn&#8217;t seem panicked, maybe just tired.<\/p>\n<p>I gave her the &#8220;Are you OK?&#8221; sign.<\/p>\n<p>No response.<\/p>\n<p>I asked again.<\/p>\n<p>No response.<\/p>\n<p>She opened her eyes a little, looked over, raised up her middle towards me and gestured &#8220;up&#8221; &#8211; maybe she was just giving me the finger?<\/p>\n<p>I grabbed her by the BC shoulder strap and started slowly dragging her towards the surface.<\/p>\n<p>I had to kick hard, but was happy to see the bottom get smaller.  <\/p>\n<p>It seemed like the longest swim to the surface that I can remember.<\/p>\n<p>Once we broke the surface, I noticed we were outside the park.<\/p>\n<p>I told Leeza to put air in her jacket; I thought she did.<\/p>\n<p>I asked her if she wanted to go in &#8211;  that was a stupid question! <\/p>\n<p>I won&#8217;t ask next time in a similar situation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Yes, let&#8217;s go in,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>The class had continued without us.<\/p>\n<p>I lifted the buoy line up and towed Leeza under the park&#8217;s border.<\/p>\n<p>I then continued to tank tow her to the stairs.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We need to go in right now!&#8221; she yelled.<\/p>\n<p>I said calmly, &#8220;We&#8217;re going there; it&#8217;s just going to take a few minutes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As we approached the stairs, the rest of the class was climbing out.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;John!&#8221; I yelled.<\/p>\n<p>He looked over, as he was looking for us.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;How&#8217;s Leeza?&#8221; John asked.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;She&#8217;s really tired.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>We helped her out and up the stairs;  she was exhausted.<\/p>\n<p>Leeza later explained that she was nauseas.  <\/p>\n<p>The only thing that she had to eat was a cup of coffee for breakfast.<\/p>\n<p>John thinks she&#8217;s hyperglycemic and is requiring her to eat before she dives from now on.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Casino Point, Catalina, CA Dove with Instructor John and his Open Water students Pedro, Leeza, Cheech and his two advanced students.* John&#8217;s wife Rebecca came along to bubble watch.
