{"id":433,"date":"2005-07-24T19:21:30","date_gmt":"2005-07-25T02:21:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/?p=433"},"modified":"2008-01-22T19:23:22","modified_gmt":"2008-01-23T02:23:22","slug":"logged-dive-133-safety-diving-for-johns-ow-class","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/?p=433","title":{"rendered":"Logged Dive #133 &#8211; Safety Diving For John&#8217;s OW Class"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Veteran&#8217;s Park, Redondo Beach, CA<\/p>\n<p>I dove as a safety diver with Instructor John&#8217;s Open Water class of five and  returning students Bonnie and Clyde, who were there for &#8220;more experience.&#8221;<strong>*<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In With: 2100 psi<br \/>\nOut With: 1900 psi<br \/>\nMax depth: 20 feet<br \/>\nWaves:  1-3 feet<br \/>\nVisibility: 10 feet but getting shittier<br \/>\nWater Temperature: Warm<br \/>\nTotal Bottom Time: 10 minutes or so<br \/>\nNotable Event: Dealing with a diver near panic, unable to swim against a current.<br \/>\n<strong>*The names of students have been changed, probably because I don&#8217;t remember them to begin with.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So now the students get to SCUBA dive.<\/p>\n<p>Leeza turned back in because of nerves.<\/p>\n<p>There was a strong current going North towards the pier; it usually goes the other way.<\/p>\n<p>All but Leeza made it through the surf zone.<\/p>\n<p>I was the first to submerge; the rest were suppose to follow.<\/p>\n<p>Lurch, Young Hottie, Bonnie and Clyde made it down.<\/p>\n<p>John was having problems getting Pedro and Green Horn down.<\/p>\n<p>We were all waiting in pretty crappy visibility that was getting worse because the students were stirring the bottom up.<\/p>\n<p>After ten minutes of waiting, I signaled for everyone to surface.<\/p>\n<p>John called the dive because of the current;  we were getting closer and closer to the pier.<\/p>\n<p>Pedro was trying to dog paddle against the current.<\/p>\n<p>I told him that I would tow him; he rolled over on his back; I grabbed his tank and started towing him.<\/p>\n<p>After a minute, Pedro yelled, &#8220;Stop! Stop! I can&#8217;t breath when you do that!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I let go.<\/p>\n<p>Pedro started to dog paddle against the current, floating towards the pier.<\/p>\n<p>I said, &#8220;I need to tow you if you can&#8217;t beat the current, you&#8217;re going in to the pier.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I grabbed his tank again and started towing him.<\/p>\n<p>Pedro yelled, &#8220;Please stop that! I&#8217;m having trouble breathing when you do that!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>By this time, John had made sure everyone else was on shore and dove back in the water and swam over to Pedro.<\/p>\n<p>John grabbed Pedro and started towing him.<\/p>\n<p>Pedro did his, &#8220;Oh, stop please I can&#8217;t breathe!&#8221; routine.<\/p>\n<p>John held on to him and yelled, &#8220;God damn it Pedro! Don&#8217;t you dare panic on me!
