{"id":3609,"date":"2015-02-24T00:10:49","date_gmt":"2015-02-24T07:10:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/?p=3609"},"modified":"2015-02-24T00:10:49","modified_gmt":"2015-02-24T07:10:49","slug":"the-second-retro-macho-dive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/?p=3609","title":{"rendered":"The Second Retro-Macho Dive"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>February 21, 2015<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Having successfully tested Joe&#8217;s retro equipment, and setting the depth record for the regulator at 74 feet, it was now his turn for the dive.<\/p>\n<p>I needed to get back into my truck to get my own gear.<\/p>\n<p>I wish I had my keys in easier access, because I now had to peel my newly acquired wetsuit off to get my keys and squeeze back into the thing &#8211; the entire process was more strenuous than the last dive.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/doublehoseGOPR0624.jpg\" alt=\"Joe is ready!\" width=\"400\" height=\"281\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3611\" srcset=\"https:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/doublehoseGOPR0624.jpg 400w, https:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/doublehoseGOPR0624-300x210.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Joe was going to do an ultra-macho retro dive &#8211; no pressure gauge, no BC jacket and the double hose that I just tested that has no auxiliary second stage &#8211; this is how Mike Nelson from <em>Sea Hunt<\/em> did all his dives.<\/p>\n<p>I was actually a little nervous, because I would have to deal with any issues that he had, but I had full confidence that he knew what he was doing.<\/p>\n<p>As we were walking down, Joe said, &#8220;You are only going to hold the depth record for about an hour.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The dive plan was to go down the shelf, hit depth and then angle over to the &#8220;Crab Shack&#8221; before heading back in.<\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;Crab Shack&#8221; is a bunch of stacked cinder blocks in about 65 feet.<\/p>\n<p>We made an easy entry and swam out just a little ways before we descended.<\/p>\n<p>Logged SCUBA Dive #488<\/p>\n<p>Dove with Joe R.<\/p>\n<p>Veterans Park, Redondo Beach, CA<\/p>\n<p>In With: 2800 psi<br \/>\nOut With: 1400 psi, I think<br \/>\nMax depth: 85 feet<br \/>\nWaves: Flat<br \/>\nVisibility: 15 feet plus<br \/>\nWater Temperature: 59 degrees<br \/>\nAir Temperature: 64 degrees<br \/>\nTotal Bottom Time: About 25 minutes<\/p>\n<p>I followed Joe.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/doublehoseGOPR0636.jpg\" alt=\"Macho Joe.\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3612\" srcset=\"https:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/doublehoseGOPR0636.jpg 400w, https:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/doublehoseGOPR0636-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I was so glad I was in my own equipment.<\/p>\n<p>Some divers complain that my gear is &#8220;old&#8221; and maybe it is, but it is not obsolete.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/doublehoseGOPR0641.jpg\" alt=\"Macho Joe.\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3613\" srcset=\"https:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/doublehoseGOPR0641.jpg 400w, https:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/doublehoseGOPR0641-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Joe was a little under weighted and had a hard time staying down, but he made it to the shelf and down to 85 feet.<\/p>\n<p>Yeah, he was now the record holder for depth with that ancient regulator.<\/p>\n<p>Fuck! <\/p>\n<p>If we were having a contest, I may have pushed it a little deeper!<\/p>\n<p>I had asked Joe if Lloyd Bridges of <em>Sea Hunt<\/em> may have breathed through that regulator.<\/p>\n<p>He said, &#8220;It is quite possible, he filmed it in the area and it is contemporary with the period.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>We did the dive plan successfully.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, no more underwater pictures came out.<\/p>\n<p>Joe must have iron lungs; he went deeper and lasted longer on that regulator that I had described in my previous post as &#8220;It was like taking a drag off a hookah with a clogged bowl.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>We made an easy exit after surfacing at 15 feet.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/doublehoseDSCF6862.jpg\" alt=\"Lloyd Bridges  could have  breathed through this regulator!\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3614\" srcset=\"https:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/doublehoseDSCF6862.jpg 400w, https:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/doublehoseDSCF6862-300x168.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><br \/>\n<em>The regulator looks very simple&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/doublehoseDSCF6866.jpg\" alt=\"A simple design\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3615\" srcset=\"https:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/doublehoseDSCF6866.jpg 400w, https:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/doublehoseDSCF6866-300x168.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><br \/>\n<em>Upon Joe opening it, I realized how simple is really is&#8230; a big diaphragm with a little  trigger mechanism the size of a match book that opened up an air valve the size of a pen top.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/doublehoseDSCF6867.jpg\" alt=\"Diving is a fucking hard job, but someone&#039;s got to do it!\" width=\"400\" height=\"247\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3610\" srcset=\"https:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/doublehoseDSCF6867.jpg 400w, https:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/doublehoseDSCF6867-300x185.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><br \/>\n<em>This shirt says it all!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Debriefing with the King Of beers ensued.<\/p>\n<p>I may be doing a repeat of my trip to Albania presentation for Dive N Surf.<\/p>\n<p>I also learned, contrary to what I have been told about &#8220;modern equipment,&#8221; that when you turn your air on, always point your gauges to the ground.<\/p>\n<p>Someone was almost blinded when the pressure gauge exploded and threw glass everywhere.<\/p>\n<p>I have also been told that I need to post more.<\/p>\n<p>Thank you Joe for the great diving experience!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>February 21, 2015 Having successfully tested Joe&#8217;s retro equipment, and setting the depth record for the regulator at 74 feet, it was now his turn for the dive.
