{"id":216,"date":"2004-06-05T22:24:29","date_gmt":"2004-06-06T05:24:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/?p=216"},"modified":"2008-01-13T16:02:25","modified_gmt":"2008-01-13T23:02:25","slug":"logged-dive-53","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/?p=216","title":{"rendered":"Logged Dive #53 The Old Marineland, Long Point RPV, CA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Long Point, CA<br \/>\n(aka The Old Marineland)<\/p>\n<p>Dove with Nick<\/p>\n<p>Nick and I met at the Point Vicente Fishing Access to check out Cardiac Hill.<\/p>\n<p>The conditions looked like crap, so we headed to Long Point.<\/p>\n<p>There was a large number of other divers there &#8211; apparently a diving club called the &#8220;Sole Searcher&#8221; or maybe &#8220;Soal Searchers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Supposedly they&#8217;re out of Pasadena.<\/p>\n<p>The couple that parked next to us later introduced themselves as Anastasia and Jeff from the dive group.<\/p>\n<p>A little after 9 AM, Nick and I headed down to the cove and went in.<\/p>\n<p>The conditions were absolutely horrible.<\/p>\n<p>Visibility was five feet at best and very soupy; there was a STRONG current pulling North-West.<\/p>\n<p>We tried swimming to the second kelp bed, but the current wore us out.<\/p>\n<p>When we submerged, we tried heading East to the kelp beds, but we ended up going in circles fighting the current.<\/p>\n<p>Visibility was sometimes nonexistent.<\/p>\n<p>We called it off and headed in.<\/p>\n<p>We warned Anastasia and Jeff about the conditions; they later called off their dive.<\/p>\n<p>The rest of their group &#8211; at least the majority &#8212; headed off the point.<\/p>\n<p>It was low tide &#8211; not a very bright thing to do as the rocks are covered with slime.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/131.jpg\" alt=\"Heavy swells lick the Point.\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We were all concerned about how they were going to make it back; divers rarely head back and go on shore at The Point.<\/p>\n<p>They usually swim to the cove, but the current today was a major concern.<\/p>\n<p>After de-gearing, Nick, Anastasia, Jeff and I walked down to The Point.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/220.jpg\" alt=\"Divers make it to shore on the Point.\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Three divers came in on The Point after getting tossed by the increasingly large waves.<\/p>\n<p>I tried to help one of them ashore, but was declined.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Where&#8217;s the dignity in that?&#8221; he asked.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/318.jpg\" alt=\"Divers are scattered along the heavy current.\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The other divers were scattered trying to swim to the cove against the current.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/414.jpg\" alt=\"Coming in half way between the Point and the cove.\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Three got tired and headed in mid-way.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/518.jpg\" alt=\"Assisting a diver.\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/613.jpg\" alt=\"Assisting a diver.\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/714.jpg\" alt=\"Assisting a diver.\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Everyone made it to shore eventually, the last made it to the cove.<\/p>\n<p>The diver- possibly the leader &#8211; who made it back in on the point, jumped back in the water to help the others.<\/p>\n<p>I stayed on shore pointing out who remained.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t think a lot of these divers were not experienced beach divers.<\/p>\n<p>At least one dropped his weight belt.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone made it back alive.<\/p>\n<p>In with: 3000 psi<br \/>\nOut with: 2500 psi<br \/>\nMaximum depth: 30 feet<br \/>\nWaves: 4+ feet<br \/>\nVisibility: 0-5 feet &#8211; It really sucked<br \/>\nWater Temperature: About 55 degrees F<br \/>\nTotal Bottom Time: About 10 minutes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Long Point, CA (aka The Old Marineland) Dove with Nick Nick and I met at the Point Vicente Fishing Access to check out Cardiac Hill.
