{"id":194,"date":"2004-05-21T20:12:41","date_gmt":"2004-05-22T03:12:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/?p=194"},"modified":"2007-12-30T10:14:32","modified_gmt":"2007-12-30T17:14:32","slug":"logged-dive-47","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/?p=194","title":{"rendered":"Logged Dive #47 White Point, San Pedro, CA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>White Point, San Pedro, CA<br \/>\nDove with Nick<em> (Photos By Nick)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I got off work early and met Nick at White Point shortly before 1 PM.<\/p>\n<p>We were both late because of a stalled truck on the bridge.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/127.jpg\" alt=\"White Point, San Pedro\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/1a1.jpg\" alt=\"The Long Point Parking Permit\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The water looked rough but manageable.<\/p>\n<p>The lifeguard drove by and asked how long we were going to be out.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/217.jpg\" alt=\"A very nice looking surfer\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Surfers were over on the other side of the beach.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/315.jpg\" alt=\"The best entrance at White Point\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/412.jpg\" alt=\"Just checking my stuff\" \/><br \/>\nWe entered the water from the same cove as our last dive here.<\/p>\n<p>Nick had his camera, I had my spear.<\/p>\n<p>It was high tide an hour before.<\/p>\n<p>This area is definitely an advanced dive.<\/p>\n<p>Long Point is easy.<\/p>\n<p>At Long Point, the rocks are round and smooth; at White Point, they&#8217;re sharp and jagged.<\/p>\n<p>The waves and currents are rougher at White Point than Long Point.<\/p>\n<p>Also, at White Point, you have to be careful coming back in.<\/p>\n<p>Otherwise, you may get pushed into a shallow reef.<\/p>\n<p>Once out of the cove and into the surf, we encountered eight foot surges.<\/p>\n<p>I tried to, or at least suggested, that we call the dive off.<\/p>\n<p>Nick wanted to keep going.<\/p>\n<p>Nick is becoming as macho as me.<\/p>\n<p>The surges look more ominous than they really are.<\/p>\n<p>They come in, hit a reef and the wave curls.<\/p>\n<p>We went down just short of the first kelp bed.<\/p>\n<p>Visibility was 15 feet and soupy.<\/p>\n<p>It was hard to stay in one place because of the surges.<\/p>\n<p>I cracked open some sea urchins, but saw no big fish.<\/p>\n<p>Nick was diving with his shark knife for the first time.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/516.jpg\" alt=\"A star fish hangs on for dear life!\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We didn&#8217;t go far and tended to hang out in one area.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/612.jpg\" alt=\"Lobsters in a hole.\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We came up on a reef with many &#8220;mini-caves.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/713.jpg\" alt=\"Some kind of weird???? sea creature!\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/810.jpg\" alt=\"Me on patrol.\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I cracked a few sea urchins and waited.<\/p>\n<p>I followed a big sheephead into one of the reefs.<\/p>\n<p>There were three huge sheephead hiding in the small cave.<\/p>\n<p>I saw the silhouette and shot just as a Garibaldi swam by.<\/p>\n<p>I hit something, but nothing was on my spear &#8211; Good!<\/p>\n<p>Nick signaled that he was low on air.<\/p>\n<p>We both ascended and carefully went in.<\/p>\n<p>Some cops were hassling people on the other side of the beach.<\/p>\n<p>In with: 3100 psi<br \/>\nOut with: 1100 psi<br \/>\nMax depth: 25 feet<br \/>\nWaves: 8 foot surges<br \/>\nVisibility: 15 feet\/soupy<br \/>\nWater temperature: I guess 60 degrees F<\/p>\n<p>During the dive, Nick picked up a star fish. I put the thing on my head for a picture, but felt the thing sticking and squeezing my head. Taking it off, I accidentally knocked my mouthpiece out. Ooops!<\/p>\n<p>We were under water about 35 minutes.
