{"id":155,"date":"2004-04-09T23:43:02","date_gmt":"2004-04-10T06:43:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/dev\/?p=155"},"modified":"2007-12-29T21:07:33","modified_gmt":"2007-12-30T04:07:33","slug":"logged-dive-37","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/?p=155","title":{"rendered":"Logged Dive #37 Veteran&#8217;s Park,  CA &#8211; Night Diving"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Veteran&#8217;s Park<br \/>\nRedondo Beach, CA<br \/>\nNight Diving<\/p>\n<p>Notable Event: First Night dive, narced, confused and didn&#8217;t realize that my buddy was on the brink of panic.<\/p>\n<p>Dove With Nick<\/p>\n<p>I had the urge to go night diving.<\/p>\n<p>There was a group going night diving last Wednesday, but today is payday and I couldn&#8217;t buy a flood light until now.<\/p>\n<p>I met Nick and Instructor Ed at Veteran&#8217;s park at 7:20 PM.<\/p>\n<p>Ed was concerned about the wind.<\/p>\n<p>Two divers coming up the stairs rated the environment as &#8220;visibility is good but it&#8217;s really dark.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>We suited up and entered the water probably around 8:30 PM.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/dev\/wp-content\/118.jpg\" alt=\"Ed is geared up and ready to go.\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Some onlookers watched us enter with bewilderment.<\/p>\n<p>The waves were up, about four feet, but the swells were really big once out.<\/p>\n<p>I had my new light cannon, Nick had my flashlight; Ed had his own light.<\/p>\n<p>Once out, Ed had problems with his BCD jacket &#8212; it kept inflating uncontrollably &#8212; and had to turn back.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/dev\/wp-content\/213.jpg\" alt=\"There\u2019s me, sort of exhausted.\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s me, sort of exhausted from making it out.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/dev\/wp-content\/313.jpg\" alt=\"Nick is looking macho, maybe a little scared?\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Nick and I rested a bit, riding the swells &#8212; which bothered Nick.<\/p>\n<p>We submerged and descended to an initial 26 feet.<\/p>\n<p>We stayed side by side; Nick gave my the &#8220;OK&#8221; sign.<\/p>\n<p>We followed the floor &#8212; visibility was 10 feet and <strong>really<\/strong> dark.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/dev\/wp-content\/510.jpg\" alt=\"A horn shark and crab are about to fight.\" \/><br \/>\nWe saw small horn sharks, local crab and a fish I had never seen before.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/dev\/wp-content\/610.jpg\" alt=\"A rock fish?\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I think this is a rock fish.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/dev\/wp-content\/710.jpg\" alt=\"We were attacked by a small crab.\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We went over the shelf and in to the canyon.<\/p>\n<p>It got really cold.<\/p>\n<p>The visibility didn&#8217;t improve.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/dev\/wp-content\/410.jpg\" alt=\"A diver\u2019s look of concern.\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Is Nick frightened or nervous here? I think he would signal if he was?<\/p>\n<p>It got to the point where the only thing I could see was sediment that was floating in the water.<\/p>\n<p>This freaked Nick out and he gave me the predesignated &#8220;I&#8217;m scared let&#8217;s go up&#8221; sign.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at my compass and started going West.<\/p>\n<p>I felt my ears pinch, looked at my gauge &#8212; we were at 75 feet and going the wrong way.<\/p>\n<p>I made this mistake before &#8212; and was pissed at myself.<\/p>\n<p>Nick gave me the &#8220;up&#8221; sign. I acknowledged.<\/p>\n<p>I swam up to surface, but Nick didn&#8217;t go anywhere.<\/p>\n<p>I was starting to get concerned about Nick panicking.<\/p>\n<p>He signaled to ask which way was shore. I looked at my compass and took a while to get my bearings &#8212; which further frightened Nick.<\/p>\n<p>I pointed in the direction of shore, he swam, got to the shelf and darted up.<\/p>\n<p>I followed, but became extremely dizzy &#8212; I had to slow down.<\/p>\n<p>In warmer water at 30 feet, Nick calmed down.<\/p>\n<p>We swam toward shore; Nick finally signalled to &#8220;go up.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>We ascended.<\/p>\n<p>The first thing Nick said to me was &#8220;I didn&#8217;t like that, let&#8217;s go in.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>We made it to shore without incident.<\/p>\n<p>Nick swam in <strong>really<\/strong> fast.<\/p>\n<p>Nick later told me that he wasn&#8217;t upset at me, but at himself.<\/p>\n<p>He just wasn&#8217;t ready for a dive like that.<\/p>\n<p>I should have detected his concern earlier &#8212; I have doubts that I could ever be an instructor.<\/p>\n<p>I think I<strong> really<\/strong> like solo diving.<\/p>\n<p>In with: 2800 psi<br \/>\nOut with: 1400 psi<br \/>\nMax depth: 75 feet<br \/>\nWaves: Four feet (big swells)<br \/>\nVisibility: 10 feet\/soupy<br \/>\nWater temperature: Cold at depths.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Veteran&#8217;s Park Redondo Beach, CA Night Diving Notable Event: First Night dive, narced, confused and didn&#8217;t realize that my buddy was on the brink of panic.
