{"id":1422,"date":"2008-09-30T23:50:02","date_gmt":"2008-10-01T06:50:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/?p=1422"},"modified":"2008-10-01T00:54:36","modified_gmt":"2008-10-01T07:54:36","slug":"lobster-hunting-skunked-in-palos-verdes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/?p=1422","title":{"rendered":"Lobster Hunting &#8211; Skunked Off Of Palos Verdes!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Logged SCUBA Dive #308<\/p>\n<p>SECRET LOCATION: 41 74 20 74 68 65 20 67 61 74 65 73 20 6f 66 20 6d 61 72 2c 20 4e 6f 72 74 68 20 6f 66 20 74 68 65 20 6c 6f 6c 69 70 6f 70 20 74 72 65 65 2e, Palos Verdes, CA<\/p>\n<p>Solo Diving, SoCal Buddy Diving<\/p>\n<p>In With: 3000 psi<br \/>\nOut With: 500 psi<br \/>\nMax depth: 35 feet<br \/>\nWaves: Pretty Flat<br \/>\nVisibility: 15 to 20 feet<br \/>\nWater Temperature: 65 degrees<br \/>\nTotal Bottom Time: About 45 minutes<\/p>\n<p>This is the same spot that I went to Sunday for my second dive, where one of the divers caught six huge lobsters in 30 feet of water under the low lying kelp.<\/p>\n<p>Tonight was a one tank dive off of Instructor John&#8217;s zodiac with &#8220;Jim&#8221; and me;  we arrived at this location around 8:30 PM.<\/p>\n<p>I submerged, determined to find some big bugs at 30 feet.<\/p>\n<p>There must be more left?<\/p>\n<p>I pinned, measured and bagged one within 10 minutes and continued on, not going shallower than 25 feet, nor deeper than 35 feet.<\/p>\n<p>I missed a few, maybe legal ones, but I am rusty in my technique with six months off.<\/p>\n<p>45 minutes later I surfaced and did a fairly short surface swim back to the zodiac where Jim was already aboard; I had bagged one lobster.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/pict0078ibidybibidy.jpg\" alt=\"Jim\u2019s Lobsters\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Jim had four way-legal bugs.<\/p>\n<p>I boarded and took a picture with my bug, holding it as close to the camera as possible to make it look huge&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/pict0080ibidybibidy.jpg\" alt=\"Me and my bug.\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I set it down to remeasure&#8230; it was close.<\/p>\n<p>The gauge fit &#8220;snugly&#8221; over the carapace, which is a legal size bug.<\/p>\n<p>When Instructor John got aboard, we measured it with his gauge &#8211; hmmm.. is it worth a $1400 fine?<\/p>\n<p>I threw it back.<\/p>\n<p>John caught one, Jim four, I got skunked.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s sort of like going to Las Vegas and watching your friends win fortunes while you lose your ass;  what am I doing wrong?<\/p>\n<p>The bugs in this location have been spooked for the last few days and are well adapt at fleeing at the slightest detection of light.<\/p>\n<p>John and I agreed, we need to find another spot, but Jim gloated, &#8220;When you&#8217;re down there, just think to yourself, &#8216;Where would Jim go?'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Last season at this time, John had caught 21 bugs &#8211; this season, so far, only five.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m getting the feeling that my problem is either old age, or I&#8217;m really unlucky, or really unskilled.<\/p>\n<p>Jim found his bugs in 15 to 20 feet of water, not under the kelp, but between the rocks.<\/p>\n<p>Next dive, I&#8217;m bringing garlic as a good luck charm.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Logged SCUBA Dive #308 SECRET LOCATION: 41 74 20 74 68 65 20 67 61 74 65 73 20 6f 66 20 6d 61 72 2c 20 4e 6f 72 74 68 20 6f 66 20 74 68 65 20 6c 6f 6c 69 70 6f 70 20 74 72 65 65 2e, Palos Verdes, [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":4,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[4,8,7,9,3,6],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1422"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/4"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=1422"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1422\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=1422"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=1422"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=1422"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
