{"id":1223,"date":"2008-04-27T20:35:54","date_gmt":"2008-04-28T03:35:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/?p=1223"},"modified":"2008-04-28T12:36:46","modified_gmt":"2008-04-28T19:36:46","slug":"logged-dive-284-long-point-beach-dive-and-barbecue-party","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/?p=1223","title":{"rendered":"Logged Dive #284 Long Point Beach Dive and Barbecue Party"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Long Point (aka The Old Marineland), Palos Verdes, California<\/p>\n<p>Solo Diving<\/p>\n<p>In With: 3000 psi<br \/>\nOut With: 800 psi<br \/>\nMax depth: About 45 feet<br \/>\nWaves: Small swells, almost as flat as a lake<br \/>\nVisibility: 8 to 10 feet, but with a lot of silt<br \/>\nWater Temperature: 54 degrees at depth, warmer on the surface<br \/>\nTotal Bottom Time: About 45 minutes<\/p>\n<p>Reverend Al had to go find the guard to have him unlock the parking lot; apparently, the<br \/>\nguard did not know that was one of his duties.<\/p>\n<p>So, running 30 minutes behind schedule, I geared up and took the torturous walk down to<br \/>\nthe rocky beach.<\/p>\n<p>It was really low tide, and I almost slipped a few times on the exposed slimy rocks.<\/p>\n<p>The air temperature must have been 90 degrees &#8211; I was sweating profusely from the walk<br \/>\ndown and entering the cool 54 degree water felt really good.<\/p>\n<p><img ALT=\"Me off of the Terranea Resort.\" SRC=\"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/pict0505ttttu.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Terranea Resort is in back of me;  it&#8217;s getting larger by the week.<\/p>\n<p>I submerged and followed my compus heading to 120 reef&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img ALT=\"120 Reef Off Of Old Marineland\" SRC=\"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/pict0516ujtjy.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img ALT=\"120 Reef Off Of Old Marineland\" SRC=\"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/pict0525yhyhy.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img ALT=\"120 Reef Off Of Old Marineland\" SRC=\"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/pict0529ttygyh.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img ALT=\"120 Reef At Old Marineland\" SRC=\"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/pict0550ttfght.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There was a lot of silt in the water, but everyone who dives here knows the old saying,<br \/>\n&#8220;When the visibility is low, go macro.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img ALT=\"120 Reef Off Of Old Marineland\" SRC=\"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/pict0537yyht.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At 45 feet, the reef ended, so I started heading in;  there&#8217;s  big patches of sand<br \/>\nbetween reefs.<\/p>\n<p><img ALT=\"A starfish eats.\" SRC=\"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/pict0545trtg.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A starfish prys open it&#8217;s next meal.<\/p>\n<p><img ALT=\"A Nudibrach\" SRC=\"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/pict0557ttgrtr.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A Nudibrach!<\/p>\n<p><img ALT=\"A colorful reef.\" SRC=\"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/pict0561ttgff.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I had a small air leak from my first stage, so I had to cut the dive short; however, I<br \/>\nwas getting cold, so I don&#8217;t think I could have gone on regardless.<\/p>\n<p>Visibility was really crappy in the cove;  I made an easy and uneventful exit.<\/p>\n<p>Dripping wet with cool water, the walk up wasn&#8217;t bad.<\/p>\n<p>Now, for the party!<\/p>\n<p><img ALT=\"Ed and Paul\" SRC=\"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/pict0576ttgtg.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>All I have to do is announce free food, and my brother shows up;  Ed showed up, too.<\/p>\n<p><img ALT=\"I barbecue, Ed drinks.\" SRC=\"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/pict0577ffgttrr.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We just had hotdogs; otherwise I would have brought my real barbecue.<\/p>\n<p>Lars was back in town diving with others;  he walked up from the beach in full SCUBA<br \/>\ngear, dripping wet.<\/p>\n<p>Ed asked him, &#8220;Did you dive this morning?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;No, I just walk around in SCUBA gear to keep myself in good shape,&#8221; Lars responded.<\/p>\n<p>I couldn&#8217;t help but laugh.<\/p>\n<p><img ALT=\"Old Marineland Parking Lot Party!\" SRC=\"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/pict0580rffr.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Beer, hotdogs, ocean air and cool people&#8230; or as Jane puts it, &#8220;Barbecuing in a parking<br \/>\nlot like we&#8217;re homeless.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Not many women can handle the walk down fully geared; so regular female divers here are a<br \/>\nrarity.<\/p>\n<p>Reverend Al asked, &#8220;Where&#8217;s all the chicks?
