{"id":1331,"date":"2008-06-21T23:24:12","date_gmt":"2008-06-22T06:24:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/?p=1331"},"modified":"2008-06-23T05:52:17","modified_gmt":"2008-06-23T12:52:17","slug":"the-scuba-show-june-21-2008","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/?p=1331","title":{"rendered":"The SCUBA Show &#8211; June 21, 2008"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I finally went to the SCUBA show after many years of assuming it was going to be a bunch of vendors pushing travel packages.<\/p>\n<p>I took the bus down to the Convention Center to avoid the parking situation and to mingle with the common folk.<\/p>\n<p>It was $12 admission into the hall and an additional $25 for unlimited Seminars &#8211; the beers were $5.50 for a Budweiser bottle.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/pict0106sss.jpg\" alt=\"The SCUBA Show\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The first Seminer that I attended was &#8220;A Divemaster Shares His Secrets&#8221; by Ken Knezick of <a target=\"_new\" href=\"http:\/\/divetrip.com\">Island Dreams<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, the title was all that persuaded me to attend.<\/p>\n<p>He briefly talked about reading other divers and safety issues, but by in large it was how to travel with gear, which gear to bring and how to chose a dive charter.<\/p>\n<p>As he said, &#8220;99% of the time, nothing goes wrong on a dive, but you want to chose a dive charter that can deal with the other 1%.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A good seminar, but I think the title should have been changed to &#8220;How Not To Have A Bad Diving Vacation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The second seminar was put on by the publisher of <a target=\"_new\" href=\"http:\/\/www.saintbrendan.com\">California Diving News <\/a>and author of <em>The Best Southern California Beach Dives<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/pict0108sss.jpg\" alt=\"A SCUBA Seminar\" \/><\/p>\n<p>He basically went over his favorite beach dives &#8211; some place in Ventura, Leo Carrillo, Old Pier number three in Redondo Beach, Malaga Cove and White Point.<\/p>\n<p>He ran out of time before he got to Orange County.<\/p>\n<p>I was going to go to &#8220;Why Divers Die,&#8221; but the lack of earth shattering news at these seminars made me just want to cruise the hall.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/Pict0110sss.jpg\" alt=\"The SCUBA Show Movie Festival\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In the back of the hall was the movie festival.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/Pict0111sss.jpg\" alt=\"The\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Some travel booths even brought some native entertainment.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/Pict0116sss.jpg\" alt=\"Ancient SCUBA Equipment\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Ancient SCUBA equipment is displayed by the Historical Diving Association.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/Pict0113sss.jpg\" alt=\"Ancient Instructor Training\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s not forget ancient instructor training, too!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/Pict0117sss.jpg\" alt=\"The SCUBA Show Hall\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The hall was fairly crowded; but during the course of the show, I ran accross many dive friends &#8211; Divevets, Pacific Wilderness, Dive and Surf.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/Pict0119sss.jpg\" alt=\"Recovered artifacts.\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The California Wreck Diving Club displays recovered artifacts.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/psychosolodiver.com\/wp-content\/Pict0122sss.jpg\" alt=\"Too much beer\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Even at $5.50 a beer, some just drank too much.<\/p>\n<p>All in all a great SCUBA Show &#8211; I will go again next year, but I think I&#8217;ll skip the seminars.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I finally went to the SCUBA show after many years of assuming it was going to be a bunch of vendors pushing travel packages.
